WATERSHED SCALE ACTIVITIES

  1. Modeling activities will take place using PHO (deltaic basin) hydrologic and hydrochemical data to calibrate the SWAT model or AquaCrop GIS at the watershed scale and SEAWAT model simulating seawater intrusion in the phreatic aquifer of the deltaic plain.  Earth Observation data (NDVI for productivity and soil moisture, if available from the corresponding partners) will be used to calibrate the plant module and the biomass production for different land uses.  The model will simulate crop production, the hydrologic cycle and the ecosystem as it is modeled through the hydrological/hydrochemical interaction between water uses and water sources (surface water and groundwater). In this way, we can quantify WEF. At the Aghia basin which is the core of PHOmodelling activities include setting up SWAT model to quantify hydrologic processes and simulate crop production taking advantage of detailed irrigation/cultivation practices and fruit production recorded in the context of other projectsMODFLOW model will be calibrated to augment with groundwater allocation within the basin, focusing in groundwater production efficiency and ensuring food security, making use of our groundwater level monitoring network that will be expanded for the needs of the project.
  1. The calibrated models will be used to run scenarios of NBS and quantify the impact to WEF
  1. These activities are part of WP5 – Task 5.4 and WP7

FIELD SCALE ACTIVITIES

  1. We will use the experimental setup of apple orchards at Agia basin where we monitor NDVI through EO data (provided by project partners) and fruit production, meteorological conditions and Precipitation (ET calculation), soil moisture profiling (water storage and percolation to ground water), irrigation groundwater abstractions and other cultivation practices.
  1. The objective is to improve water use efficiency, increase productivity and reduce production costs.
  1. We will identify 6-8 stakeholders (apple farmers) that will be our focus group.
  1. We will take advantage of already installed soil moisture probes at the fields of selected farmers and will provide irrigation scheduling advice to help them reduce irrigation demand. Moreover, irrigation scheduling advice will be provided for the fields not including sensors, based on our appropriately modified algorithms.
  1. We will prepare a business model with their involvement and also the involvement of local, regional and even national scale stakeholders (WP6)
