Koiliaris (Crete)

Koiliaris Critical Zone (Crete – Greece)

Pilot leader: Nikolaos Nikolaidis

WATERSHED SCALE ACTIVITIES

  1. Modeling activities will take place using Koiliaris-CZO hydrologic and geochemical data to calibrate the SWAT-ICZ model at the watershed scale.  Earth Observation data (NDVI for productivity and soil moisture) will be used to calibrate the plant module and the biomass production for different land uses.  The model will simulate food production, the hydrologic cycle and the ecosystem as it is modeled through the geochemical fluxes to ground water, surface water and changes in the below ground bacterial fungi and higher predators biomass.  In this way, we can fully quantify WEF
  1. The calibrated model will be used to run scenarios of NBS and quantify the impact to WEF
  1. These activities are part of WP5 – Task 5.5 and WP7

FIELD SCALE ACTIVITIES

  1. We will use the experimental setup of an avocado field where we monitor NDVI and PRI (Productivity), Meteorological conditions and Precipitation (ET calculation), soil moisture with depth (water storage and percolation to ground water) and irrigation.
  1. The objective is to reduce irrigation demands and increase productivity.
  1. We will identify 6-8 stakeholders (avocado farmers) that will be our focus group
  1. We will install soil moisture probes at their field to help them reduce irrigation demand
  1. We will run the 1D-ICZ model to simulate plant growth and the ecosystem processes
  1. We will prepare a business model with their involvement (WP6)
  1. Optimize the NEXUS
